REALLY Big Brother
"Privacy in America these days is an illusion. Unfortunately, there are only two options left for dealing with the invasive nature of public and private sector data collection in the good old USA: live with it or go off the grid.
By the latter, I mean enter the underground economy and deal only on a cash basis. That would mean cutting up your credit cards, canceling all of your bank accounts, not using a telephone or cell phone, nor the utilities to provide electricity, heat or running water in your house. It would mean tearing up your Social Security card, refusing to pay taxes, and forfeiting the right to vote and the ability to own property. And forget about the convenience of buying anything over the internet.
It would also mean throwing away your driver's license and car registration. That of course would make it almost impossible to earn a livable wage unless you reside in a major urban area and have access to public transportation or ride a bike. You don't need a license to ride one - yet. But regular employment would be out of the question anyway, since you would have to provide your Social Security number to your prospective employer to prove you are not an unregistered alien or part of a terrorist cell planning the next strike on the heartland. Or you could invest in a false set of identity papers. Then you would be breaking the law, but you are already a criminal by refusing to pay your taxes.
You get the idea. There is no Plan B."
The above is quoted from the book "Odyssey of an Eavesdropper: My life in electronic countermeasures and my battle against the FBI," by Martin L. Kaiser III. Anyone who still thinks the Amish are all wet needs to read the book. But for the rest of us, this is still America, and we still have choices. We can choose between Orwell's '1984', and Huxley's 'Brave New World'.

Is the weather out there getting real windy and cold yet? Many years ago I dealt with a few "patriot" types that had checked out of the system, as described by the quote you gave, and they just about destroyed their families or had none. They diminished down to about nothing and were wards of those who took pity on them. Even though they claimed they were "free," they had very little of it, as they were always looking over their back. They were, however, constantly putting pressure on people to pay them “under the table” for services rendered, which placed those who employed them in jeopardy. Though many espoused faith in God, they fled when confronted with the commandments of God.
Since we are working with the Amish in getting Missouri Woods up and running, I have come to have a far greater respect for them. If only they would come to a worldview based upon the absolute Sovereignty and present rule of Christ over Heaven and earth. Where are the Puritan covenanters when we need them?
Missouri Rev,
I've known patriot types as well, and I don't recommend the extremes they go to in order to check out of 'the system'. But it saddens me that we can't have our cake and eat it too. We can't seem to have the blessings of modernity without someone listening/tracking/interfering as 'they' see fit.
This last post reflects my strong paranoid streak; not to mention my melancholy personality. I constantly have to tell myself 'rejoice in the Lord, always, again I say, rejoice!' It's amazing Paul could write those words while in a roman prison; and if he could do that, why can't I rejoice in my circumstances? But I won't bore you with my spiritual malaise.
Still, our God is bigger then even big brother, and we can take common-sense precautions and remain plugged in. The amish have managed an uneasy peace with the powers that be, but it hasn't been without cost. They pretty much blazed the legal trail for homeschoolers. They've managed to escape social security, through a conscious decision to take care of their own. There may be other issues and areas I'm not aware of. I agree with you; I wish the spiritual heirs of the puritans would wake up!
As to the weather, it's always windy as you well know, and yes, it's cold as well! Keep in touch Rev, I value your insights.
